How does ChatGPT choose which business to recommend?

In short

When asked for a recommendation, ChatGPT combines what the model already knows with a live web search, and picks businesses that appear repeatedly, consistently and in the right context in sources it trusts. A business that clearly explains what it does, is mentioned elsewhere, and is readable by AI crawlers gets the edge.

The two sources of every answer

Every AI engine has a "memory" - what the model learned in training - and "eyes" - a live search it runs at question time. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews lean heavily on live search and show their sources. More general questions are sometimes answered from memory alone.

So you work on both sides: be easy to find and quote today, and build a consistent presence that future model versions will absorb.

Which signals decide?

From our own measurement against the engines, these signals come up again and again:

  • Consensus - engines prefer a business that several independent sources describe the same way.
  • Fit to the question - a page that answers the exact question ("for small businesses in Haifa") beats a generic one.
  • A clear entity - one name, a defined field, identical address and contact details everywhere, and structured data (schema) on the site.
  • Freshness - a visible updated date and maintained content.
  • Access - a site crawlers can read, with no blocks and no content that only loads through JavaScript.

Where do engines get information about businesses?

Beyond your own site, the common sources are:

  • Your Google Business Profile and reviews.
  • Articles, guides and "best of" lists on sites in your field.
  • Forum and community discussions such as Reddit and professional groups.
  • Professional networks such as LinkedIn.
  • Open knowledge bases such as Wikidata.

What can you do this week?

  • Check that robots.txt does not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot.
  • Write your business name exactly the same way on your site, on Google and on social networks.
  • Open your main service page with a paragraph that answers directly: what you do, for whom, and where.
  • Ask happy customers for a review that describes, in their words, what you did.

Frequently askedquestions.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend me?

You cannot buy a place in an engine’s organic answer. Some engines sell ads, but they are labelled and separate from the recommendation itself - GEO is about the organic recommendation.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

Usually because more consistent sources describe them in the context of the question. A GEO diagnosis shows exactly which sources the engine draws from - and the gap is built from there.
