How to check whether ChatGPT recommends your business - step by step

To check whether AI engines recommend you: write 5–10 questions a real customer would ask, ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and record for each answer whether you were mentioned, in what position, how you were described, and which competitors appeared instead. Repeat monthly, because answers change.
Step 1: write your customers’ questions
Do not ask "what do you know about my business" - customers never ask that. Write questions where a customer is looking for a solution without knowing you:
- A recommendation: "Who is the best company for … in Israel?"
- A local question: "… in [city] that suits a small business"
- A comparison: "What is the difference between [you] and [competitor]?"
- A problem: "How do I solve [the problem you solve]?"
Step 2: ask several engines in a clean window
Use a private window or a fresh chat with no history, so your own preferences do not shape the answer. Ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google Search (where AI Overviews appear). Ask in both Hebrew and English.
Step 3: record four things per answer
- Whether you were mentioned.
- Where - first, in the middle, or only when asked directly.
- How you were described - is it accurate and current.
- Who appeared instead, and which sources the engine cited.
Step 4: what do your findings mean?
Not mentioned at all - the engines probably do not understand enough about you, or your site is not readable to them. Mentioned with a wrong description - there are old or conflicting sources online. A competitor appears again and again - look at the sources the engine cites for them: that is where the key is.

Why do I get a different answer every time?
AI engines are not deterministic - the same question can return different answers. That is why each question is measured several times and you look at the share of appearances, not a single answer.
How often should I check?
