GEO vs SEO: what’s the difference, and what does your business need?

In short

SEO improves your position in a search engine’s list of results, and is measured in clicks and rankings. GEO improves the chance that an AI engine mentions and recommends you inside its answer, and is measured by how often and in what context you appear. Most businesses need both - the foundation is shared, the goal is different.

What is each one trying to achieve?

In SEO the goal is a click: rank high so the visitor enters your site. In GEO the goal is a mention: the engine itself tells the customer "you should contact…" - sometimes before the customer has seen any website.

What do they share?

A lot. A site that works well for GEO almost always works well for SEO:

  • Original, useful content that answers real questions.
  • Clear structure - headings, schema (JSON-LD), a sitemap.
  • A fast site that crawlers can read.
  • Trust - complete business details, reviews and external mentions.

What is different about GEO?

A few things that are "nice to have" in SEO become critical in GEO:

  • A direct answer at the top of every page - engines quote passages, not pages.
  • One business name everywhere - the engine must understand every mention is the same business.
  • Unlinked mentions count - appearing in the right context builds authority on its own.
  • Access for AI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) - blocking them removes you from answers.
  • Different measurement - you ask the engines and read the answers, not just Search Console.

So where do you invest first?

If your site is not technically sound yet, start there - it serves both. If it is, and you already appear on Google, the next question is what ChatGPT answers when asked for a recommendation in your field. If you are not in that answer, that is where GEO starts.

Frequently askedquestions.

If I rank first on Google, will I appear in ChatGPT?

Not necessarily. Ranking well helps, but the engine chooses based on what it understands about you from many sources - a competitor with less traffic and clearer mentions can win the answer.

Can GEO work hurt SEO?

Done right, no - GEO is built on useful content and clean structure, which Google rewards anyway.
